چکیده

Overenthusiastic repair of damaged blood vessels could cause a fatal blockage. Sedding et al. (page 2801) report that the normal repair-restricting function of factor VII activating protease (FSAP) is disrupted by a common mutation. People carrying the mutation might thus be more at risk of vessel narrowing. Approximately 5% of the population carries an FSAP polymorphism linked to cardiovascular disease. The authors’ previous in vitro evidence suggested that wild-type FSAP, a plasma protein, limits vessel repair processes in part by inactivating PDGF-BB—a growth factor which promotes the proliferation and migration of blood vessel wall cells during repair. The team isolated and characterized the mutated form of FSAP and discovered that although its ability to bind PDGF-BB was unaltered, it failed to cleave the protein efficiently. Wild-type human FSAP reduced vascular cell proliferation and accumulation at sites of injury in a mouse model—most likely by reducing PDGF-BB activity. The mutant protein, however, provided no such restraint, suggesting that people possessing the mutation might generate excessive scar tissue during vessel repair. Vessel narrowing occasionally recurs after surgical repair. If, as the team suspects, recurrence correlates with the FSAP polymorphism, then screening cardiovascular patients for the mutation might identify those at risk. Dynamic DCs of the gut

Influence of exercise modality on agreement between gas exchange and heart rate variability thresholds

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the level of agreement between the gas exchange threshold (GET) and heart rate variability threshold (HRVT) during maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) using three different exercise modalities. A further aim was to establish whether there was a 1:1 relationship between the percentage heart rate reserve (%HRR) and percentage oxygen up...

Maximal leg-strength training improves cycling economy in previously untrained men.

PURPOSE This study examined cycling economy before and after 8 wk of maximal leg-strength training. METHODS Seven previously untrained males (25 +/- 2 yr) performed leg-strength training 3 d.wk(-1) for 8 wk using four sets of five repetitions at 85% of one repetition maximum (1RM). Body mass, lean-leg muscle mass (LLM), percentage of body fat, and leg strength (1RM) were measured at 0, 4, and...

A Combined Experimental and Computational Study of Vam3, a Derivative of Resveratrol, and Syk Interaction

Spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) plays an indispensable role through preliminary extracellular antigen-induced crosslinking of Fc receptor (FcR) in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, we identify Vam3, a dimeric derivative of resveratrol isolated from grapes, as an ATP-competitive inhibitor of Syk with an IC50 of 62.95 nM in an in vitro kinase assa...

Dark chocolate supplementation reduces the oxygen cost of moderate intensity cycling

BACKGROUND Dark chocolate (DC) is abundant in flavanols which have been reported to increase the bioavailability and bioactivity of nitric oxide (NO). Increasing NO bioavailability has often demonstrated reduced oxygen cost and performance enhancement during submaximal exercise. METHODS Nine moderately-trained male participants volunteered to undertake baseline (BL) measurements that comprise...
